Is bronze resin bronze?
Is cold cast or bronze resin actually bronze?
No. Cold cast bronze and bronze resin are resin with bronze or brass powder mixed into the surface layer. No metal is melted and nothing is poured. The result can look convincing and it is genuinely cheaper, but it is a resin object with a metallic skin, not a metal casting, and it should be described that way.
01 · The short version
The short version
Cold cast bronze is not bronze. It is resin.
The process is straightforward: bronze or brass powder is loaded into the first layer of resin poured against the mould face, then the rest of the mould is backed up with plain resin. Once cured and demoulded, the metal loaded surface is burnished and often patinated, so what you see and touch reads as metal. Underneath the first millimetre or so, it is a resin casting.
Nothing is melted. Nothing is poured at over a thousand degrees. There is no crucible, no ceramic shell and no furnace involved.
The terms you will encounter for this are cold cast bronze, bronze resin, bonded bronze, cold cast metal and resin bronze. They all describe the same category of object.
02 · Why it goes unsaid
Why almost nobody says this plainly
Because the material genuinely works. A good cold cast piece is convincing, and there is nothing wrong with the material itself. It is only the naming that causes damage, and the naming is inherited: the trade has used "cold cast bronze" for decades and the phrase is now doing two jobs at once.
So this page is not an accusation. It is the sentence a buyer needs and rarely gets: the word bronze appears in the name of a material that contains no poured metal.
03 · Telling them apart
Telling them apart
If you can handle the piece:
Temperature. Metal pulls heat out of your hand and stays cool for a long time. Resin sits at room temperature and warms almost immediately.
Weight. A solid or thick walled metal casting is heavy in a way that surprises people. Resin is light for its size. Be careful with this one on hollow castings, where wall thickness varies, but on small pieces it is decisive.
Sound. Tapping metal produces a ring that carries. Resin produces a dull knock.
The parts nobody finishes. The inside of a base, the underside, the back of a wall mounted piece. The metal loaded face coat often does not reach there, and plain resin colour shows.
If you cannot handle the piece, ask. In writing.
04 · When cold cast fits
When cold cast is the right answer
It frequently is, and it deserves saying clearly:
- indoor decorative work where the piece will not be handled hard
- larger runs at a price point that solid metal cannot reach
- anything where weight is a real constraint: wall mounted work, tall thin forms, pieces that travel to exhibitions
- prototypes and presentation models, before committing to metal
Choosing cold cast for any of those reasons is a good decision. Being sold cold cast at a cast bronze price is a different situation entirely, and it is the one this page exists to prevent.
05 · What to ask for
What to ask for
One sentence on the quotation is enough:
Is this piece solid cast metal, or a resin composite?
A supplier who answers that plainly has told you what you are buying. If the answer is a resin composite and the price reflects it, everything is in order.
The same principle covers the metal itself, in is this bronze or brass.
06 · What we do
What we do
Deco Foundry casts metal. Silicon bronze and brass, by the lost wax method, poured molten into a ceramic shell that is destroyed in the process. That is the whole of what happens here, and it is described on the process page.
If a project genuinely suits cold cast, we would rather tell you than sell you a metal casting you did not need.
07 · Common questions
Common questions
Is cold cast bronze real bronze?
No. Cold cast bronze is a resin object with bronze powder in its surface layer. No metal is melted and no metal is poured. It is a different material with a different price, a different lifespan and a different resale value.
What is bronze resin?
Another name for the same thing. Resin is cast into a mould with metal powder loaded into the face coat, then the surface is burnished or patinated so it reads as metal.
How can I tell cold cast from a real bronze casting?
Temperature and weight are the usual first clues. Metal feels cold to the touch and warms slowly. Resin feels close to room temperature straight away and is noticeably lighter for its size. A hidden underside or the inside of a base often shows resin colour where the metal loaded face coat does not reach. If the piece is unmarked and you cannot handle it, ask in writing.
Is cold cast a scam?
Not at all. It is a legitimate material with real advantages, and plenty of good work is made in it. The problem is only ever a description: cold cast sold and priced as cast bronze.
When is cold cast the right choice?
Indoor decorative work, larger runs at a lower price point, pieces where weight is a problem such as wall mounted work or anything that has to travel often, and prototypes or presentation models before committing to metal.
Will cold cast last outdoors?
Resin behaves differently from metal in sunlight and weather, and the two age in different ways. If a piece is going outside and is meant to stay there for decades, that is the case for casting it in metal.
Does Deco Foundry make cold cast pieces?
We are a metal foundry. We cast silicon bronze and brass by the lost wax method. If a project genuinely suits cold cast, we would rather say so than sell you a metal casting you did not need.
